Task 2
Question: Many governments think economic progress is their most important goal. Some people, however, think other types of progress are equally important for a country. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Arguments and counter-arguments are in profusion about one of the most highly discussed and debated issues in the society: economic progress versus other types of progress. Whilst fiscal policy experts vehemently voice their cogent arguments in favour of economic upsurge, which, in fact, is the backbone of a nation's survival and individuality, others such as socialists and social scientists fight this viewpoint tooth and nail. After compiling the arguments for and against the crux of the matter, the logical conclusion of mine will eventually be worded in a crystal clear fashion.

At the outset, it has to be made amply clear that the very concept of dividing the comity of nations as developed, under developed and developing heralds that economic enterprises and their success are of paramount importance. Needless to say, from time immemorial, there has been an incessant influx of emigrants to those economic power houses in search of greener pastures; this phenomenon matter-of-factly brings to light that financial status and stability do matter. To amplify further, if a nation is not financially viable, the number of have-nots escalates, thus more penury prevails among its citizens who are compelled to struggle for a day's square meal. Further, if the economic progress is impeded, the officialdom can barely generate employment even to its educated lot, and it may pave the way for economic breakdown, which could cause detrimental repercussions among the general masses of the populace. In brief, economic surge is indispensable, and any dearth of it could result in brain drain, which indeed is a colossal loss to the country's bright future.

Nonetheless, the advocates of the anti-thesis of economic progress-theory have articulated time and again that they would be contented only if there is comprehensive and massive upsurge in all realms including social security, health and education. Unfortunately, the top-ranking officials do not pay heed to their passionate pleas, hence the oft-repeated outery of those activists for a state with economic equality is now merely a cliche. However, they have not forsaken the sublime idea; it is pinpointed that the benefits of economic boom have to reach the destitute to help salvage their pathetic predicament. Simultaneously, substantial surge has to be achieved in the areas of education and health, for which relevant policies and adequate fund allocation are to be envisaged and implemented, whereupon a spectacular show in women's emancipation and child care will also emerge.

While conceding the stance of the devil's advocates, I feel bound to express my personal perception regarding this thorny issue, which is certainly a bone of contention: though economic progress is an inevitability for a nation's popularity and prosperity, the plain truth is that the governments ought to adopt an uncompromising stand in order to help usher in a success - saga when all the citizens possess a greater degree of wellbeing.

Tip:
  • provide a reason and an example for each of your arguments
  • summarise the points made in the essay in the conclusion
  • if appropriate, state your opinion in formal style (e.g. It is my firm belief that)
