Task 2
Question: Education of young people is the main priority in many countries. However, educating young adults who cannot write or read is even more important, and governments should spend more on this. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

No matter what epoch one lives in, every state machinery has attached paramount importance to education, which plays an integral role in the development of a society. It is said that in a good many countries, the prominent thrust in this regard is towards grooming adolescents, who, they think, will steer the nation to perfection in the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, there are many who think that the onerous task of any government is to help the lot of the illiterate young people so that they will be in a better position to cope with their dismal future. .

To my mind, even though it is the uppermost obligation of any responsible regime to provide education to every Tom, Dick and Harry in the country, greater emphasis has to be laid on the young adults who are unable to read or write. Once the latter group is adequately educated, the first and foremost duty of a government is accomplished. On the other hand, if the illiterate are not educated, the implications are manifold. In the first instance, they are prone to remain ignorant of key information, whereupon all the doors to job opportunities are closed. Secondly, it is a psychological torture if they are labelled as the ones who cannot read or write.

Whatever is referred above is only the tip of the iceberg. Whilst the privileged in the society enjoy a host of benefits, say, the higher tertiary education and a window of opportunity for lucrative jobs, the illiterate are destined to struggle to make both ends meet as their daily wages are rather meagre. At this juncture of their crisis, it is likely they are led astray; to be explicit, they become the pawns in the hands of the mighty and moneyed lobby in the country, and commit all kinds of crime including drug-peddling, heinous murders et cetera.

Therefore, the officialdom ought to spell out their cut-and-dried policies and programmes to emancipate the uneducated youth from the impending impediments to the progress in their lives. Another suggestion is that ample fund has to be allocated and expended solely for the cause of this vulnerable group of young people. Added to this, in order to get rid of their apathy towards learning, they must be encouraged with incentives galore, provided that they evince interest in learning the three Rs (reading, writing and arithmetic).

At the culmination of this educational treatise, I would unhesitatingly reiterate my stance time and again that bold initiatives have to be adopted by the officials at the helm of educational department in order that the illiterate young adults get profuse opportunities to be acquainted with the basic skills of formal education, thus gaining morale tantamount to that of the highly educated elite.
